Brown Pelican - This is one of the commonest and smallest of the North American species of pelican. It measures close to 4 feet long and has a wingspread of nearly 7 feet. It prefers to inhabit coastal regions where there are many people. This brown-plummaged bird has a long straight bill with a flexible pouch of skin on the underside (it uses this pouch to catch fish - its main source of food). Webbed feet aid in its excellent swimming ability, and although it is clumsy on land, it is a skillful flyer.
